| SCHONELL CINEMA & LIVE THEATRE Welcome to the Schonell Cinema & Live Theatre complex, standing proudly in the UQ Union Complex, on the lovely landscaped grounds of the University of Queensland, St Lucia Brisbane.
The Schonell opened to the public in 1970 with the live stage production “Bachoi” by Bryan Nason. The Play included in its cast Geoffrey Rush and Billie Brown – both students of UQ at the time. The Schonell complex underwent a $4 million refurbishment in 2005 and includes 4 versatile venues suitable for (but not limited to) Cinema, Ballet, Orchestra, Live Bands, theatrical performances, Conferences, Lectures, Product Launches, Gala awards and then there’s the pizza café for the best pizza in town.

|  Cement Box | HOW TO GET TO THE SCHONELL CINEMA & LIVE THEATRE COMPLEX By Car From the City, use the Riverside Expressway and head towards Toowong along Coronation Drive. Go straight ahead past Toowong Shopping Village and at the Caltex service station turn left into Sir Fred Schonell Drive - this will take you to the main entrance of the University. Go straight ahead at the roundabout at the entrance to the campus. Turn left into Blair Drive, and then at the University Swimming Pool turn right into Union Road, we are located at the end of Union Road. By City Cat The City Cat is an easy and convenient way to get to the Schonell. You simply need to take the ferry to the University of Queensland (the final stop before the City Cat turns around to go back into the city). The ferry stop is located across the road from the University Swimming Pool and from there we are just a 3 - 5 minute walk up the hill, at the end of Union Road.
By Bus
There are numerous buses that travel to the University Campus. For example, from Adelaide Street in the City (near JB Hi-Fi) you can take the 412 Express to the University. The main bus stop at the University is located at Chancellor's Place. From there walk east through the Great Court (look for the large sandstone building with the expansive grass and tree covered area at the centre) towards Campbell Place (about a 5 to 10 minute walk). Once you reach Campbell Place you should seen signs pointing to the Schonell. We are about a 1 to 2 minute walk from Campbell Place. Alternatively the Green Bridge Bus Stop is also close – follow the signs to the Schonell from this stop.
